Banyan Drive, which receives its name from the old banyan trees that
shade it, is the beginning of your tour. This road curves along the
waterfront and you will pass by these trees, many of which were planted
by famous visitors to the city such as Babe Ruth, Cecil B. DeMille, and
Amelia Earhard. A stop at the Liliuokalani Gardens, so named for Queen
Kikiuokalani, will prove to be a delicous introduction to Japanese
gardens. This is a 30-acre park filled with bonsai, carp ponds, pagodas,
and a moon-gate bridge. Here you can enjoy an awesome view of Mauna Kea,
one of the world’s tallest mountains, and a gorgeous view of the Hamakua
The contrast between the gardens and your next visit, an intro to Hilo the city, is apparent. Your guide will give you the historic background of Hilo and embellish with tales that locals share.
